From the Tongariro Transport Hub - Secure Carpark at the Tongariro Alpine Crossing TRACK END on State Highway 46.
Described as the best one-day hikes in Aotearoa/New Zealand, The Tongariro Alpine Crossing provides an opportunity to experience some of the most scenic and most active volcanic areas of the National Park. The total distance is 19.4km. Expect to be dazzled by the sights and sounds you will encounter.
The track winds up the Mangatepopo Valley, up and between Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. The track then leads accross south crater rising to the highest point at Oturere / Red Crater - 1886m. Down to Nga Rotopaunamu - Emerald lakes then across North Crater sweeping by Te Waiwhakata o Te Rangihiroa - Blue Lake. The route then descends to Ketetahi. Here you will gaze upon Ketetahi Thermal Springs - Sacred healing waters steeped in the history of Ngati Tuwharetoa. You descend leaving the alpine flora into Te Wao Nui a Tane - The great forest of Tane. You end your journey at the Ketetahi Carpark....you then walk a further 10 minutes down the side of the metal roadway, back to where your vehicle is parked.
